Up the Schilthorn take 2 - Fri

Fri 10th Oct 2014

Woke up slightly disappointed as it was overcast and we were hoping to take Jess up The Schilthorn early. Decided to hang around to see if the weather improved. As we were outside watching Base Jumpers we noticed a parachute half way up the mountain under a shear rock face. We had heard earlier, from our beds, a scream as if someone was in trouble, followed by a cry for joy so thought everything was fine. But no  - it was a Base Jumper that had crashed! Next minute a helicopter was dropping off medics and rescue workers at the site - it was terrifying and exciting at the same time. We were concerned that it might have been one of the jumpers we had got to know. We watched the whole rescue and were amazed at how dangerous it was for the helicopter having to go so close to the rock face and for the rescuers. The jumper was lowered down by the helicopter  in the field in front of us before being put into the helicopter and whisked away. We found out later that it was a Swedish guy who had several broken bones including legs arms and ribs! But at least he had survived. May find out more tomorrow. The cloud had now cleared so made the decision to walk to Stechelberg and get the cable cars up (x4) to The Schilthorn. We had made the right decision as even though it wasn't as clear as when we went up last week it was still a great view and being in the clouds gave it an even more dramatic feel. Jess was impressed and thought it compared well with going up the Jungfrau which costs 3 times more! Had a meal in the revolving restaurant (a coke cost $7 so I won't mention how much the meal cost!!!) before visiting The 007 James Bond world. Had a laugh in the helicopter and made a video of us on a bobsleigh (see my Facebook page it's hilarious). Came down the 4 cable cars again and walked back to Priscilla for some nice homemade soup and out last night with Jess :( before she flys home.
