Offas Dyke-Montgomery to Llandegla

We left The Dragon Inn in Montgomery in glorious sunshine and dry boots!

The dry boots didn’t last long! Still so much water around.Todays walk goes from Montgomery to Buttington 11miles.

We’re getting there! 🥾🥾

Climbed up to Beacon ring and got a fabulous view. Met 2 archeologists who were digging around the entrances.

This was hard going! And we couldn’t avoid it.

Arrived in Buttington and had much need showers.

Morning view.

Think this maybe our next mode of transport?!

Me waiting for the bus. Today David got 3 buses to retrieve the car so I went into Welshpool for the morning.

The Montgomery Canal.

Just love watching the locks in action.

David arrived back and we sat in the sun reading- it was heaven.

Packing up. So nice to have a table and seats.

This lovely family from Berlin are doing the same walk as us. 280kms! With their 2 gorgeous girls Cora 9 and Margaret 7. How very brave and what an adventure for them.

Set off today from Buttington. Today’s walk is all on the flat! No hills! 😃

These cows were all quite young and were very inquisitive and they decided to chase us! It was really scary and we just got through the gate in time.

A swan on its nest on the disused part of the canal.

We walked more than today’s allocation and climbed Llanymynech Hill and ate out takeaway kebabs.

We headed for a B&B that said they had facilities for basic camping too. When we arrived after 8 hours of walking no one was there!!!

So we set off to wild camp but realised we were out of water! So turned around and knocked on the door of the nearest house and he said we could put the tent up in his chicken field! Yes please.

After a great nights sleep we set off and when we looked back couldn’t believe how far we had walked in one day.

I found Santa Clause in the fields.

Walked into the village of Trefonen and waited for The  Barley Mow to open as it is Sunday and I was hanging out for a roast.

Ended up staying in the pub for 4 hours as David wanted to watch the cricket and the beers were only £2.75 a pint! So I caught up on some of Australia’s MKR.

Walked up onto and over the site of the old Oswestry Racecourse 1800’s

We arrived at the Oswestry Equestrian Centre who offered tent 🏕 pitches - toilets but no showers. Who was on the site? The lovely family from Berlin. We compared our days photos and they were the same! Cora had even picked up the sheep wool (David’s Santa beard) and was walking around looking like a Yeti!

Thank goodness there were steps here.

Chirk Castle in the distance. Yes another hill to climb.

Coffee time at the castle.

The Viaduct

The Pontcysyllte Aquaduct - what an amazing engineering achievement for the early 1800.

A floating shop.

We have seen this so many times on tv and couldn’t believe we were actually walking over it. It was so high! Not for the faint hearted.

Next minute we were in the woods.

Looking down over Llangollen. We decided not to walk down there to camp and then have to walk back up onto the path the next morning so we walked on to find a wild camp spot.

Castle Dinas Bran. Just around this corner we found a farm campsite- again toilet but no shower. After we had set up camp David couldn’t resist walking up to the castle ruins even though we had just walked over 20kms!

He was so pleased he did walk up here as the views were incredible.

Down below in the town of Llangollen he could hear  music playing as it was a big week of Eisteddfod. Jools Holland playing tonight.
David waved his arms frantically as below he could see the family from Berlin pitching their tent. The green tent in the far corner. But they didn’t see him.

Our site really did have A Loo with a view.

These people from Manchester were on our site and walked down into the town for the music festival- they said Jools Holland was brilliant.

Off we set the next morning- chilly. We followed and then went up and around a huge escarpment.

Yes that’s the path we are following.

Left a message for our German friends. Hope they see it.

What diverse scenery today - now on moorland.

Then 2kms through mesmerising woods.

Arrived at  Llandegla and there was a campsite right on the path-with showers!!!! Set up the tent and walked into the village for much needed coffee and cake at the local community shop and cafe. Good to hear these communities are saving their shops and post offices and giving the retirees and old generations a purpose in life.

I spent the day relaxing and washing on the campsite while David got 3 buses back to Buttington to retrieve the car.

Had a wonderful meal in The Crown as last night the kitchen wasn’t open and they let us have an Indian delivered which we ate while watching the Women’s World Cup semifinals USA vs England. There is an update on our German friends but that will be in our next blog. Big tough walk tomorrow so early to bed. Only 3 more days to go!🥾🥾
