Paint The Old School House and prep for Wales

Arrived in the middle of the night so stayed at Ali’s in Whitwell. Ali’s niece Ellie made me put on her Ariel face mask! She then dropped us off back in Harpenden. Mike & Liz are in Scotland for the week so have the place to ourselves.

Unpacked from Spain then got ready to go out. It’s still light here until 9.30pm!

The White Horse in Eaton Bray

Met up with Roger’s family in the pub then all went to The Masala Indian restaurant also in Eton Bray.

It was so great to see them all again after 4 years.
June Katie Me Sue

David David and Michael. We had a fabulous night with lots of food drinks and laughs.

Sunday. A day to relax. I started one of Liz’s puzzles and caught up on odd bits that needed sorting out. Lovely weather but not as hot as Spain.

Ali came over in the evening and I cooked us a roast dinner.

I have finally worked out a great recipe for Yorkshire puddings.
David cleaning our car.

Monday we went back to stay with Jude in Upper Sundon at the Old School House and get some jobs done for her. David pressure hosing the front gates.

I started painting all the fences.

Jude kept us supplied with plenty of coffee and too much food! She also kept us entertained by trying to help paint the undercoat on the gates and proceeded to fall over while still holding the full tin of paint! What a site it was!

David after he high pressure hosed the porch to get rid of all the loose paint! After a good day Jude cooked us a delicious chicken roast dinner. A few wines were had followed by a late night.

Poached eggs for breakfast then Jude went off to the hardware store for more paint supplies.

We talked Jude into letting us paint the stone window surrounds. Health and safety rules were taken into consideration!!!

Before

After.

Jude’s friend Mary popped in to meet us and inspect the work. She has a visitor arriving soon from Australia and guess where she is from? Yes Mindarie!!! Oh what a small world. Still not finished all the jobs so stayed another night.

Jude leaving for work Wednesday morning and taking a picture of her new looking house. David put in some new skirting in the hall too.

This part of the house on the right is actually part of the school so really not supposed to do anything with it- so of course we painted it!

What a difference.

Before

After. What a difference a couple of days make. We were so very thrilled with what we got done and so was Jude. We think she is making another list for when we go back-hope so as we really enjoy doing things like this.

On the way back to Harpenden we drove past my Mum and Dads old house - Willow End. It look so lovely and many happy memories came flooding back.

Back in Harpenden we started sorting and packing for Wales. We really should start this walk soon! 🥾🥾

Their garden is looking fantastic and is nearly finished.

A very short haircut ready for our walk.

We picked Mike and Liz up from Luton airport after their week in Scotland and played the card game Monopoly Deal up by the greenhouse in glorious sunshine.

I cooked them a steak pie with all the trimmings to welcome them home. Off to Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 in the morning. Excited for our next adventure. Thanks Mike and Liz for letting us use your home as a base. Makes life easier.

Spain 🇪🇸 Arboleas

May 15th - May 24th

Alarm went off at 4.30am! Jane drove us to Flaçà train station and we said our goodbyes -very sad to leave our dear friend. But she has promised to visit us in Australia. I am sure we will see her again this trip too.

After 2 trains and a bus to Barcelona airport we got a Vueling flight to Almeria.

The greenhouses and solar panels of southern Spain.

After being picked up by Ali and her Dad Les we drove to the beach front of Mojácar. The weather was glorious.

Les with Ali and David.

We had a Menu del dia €12 each 3 course lunch at The Beachcomber. English owned and all the staff were English.

Drove to Les’s villa in Arboleas he has lived here for 15 years. It is absolutely beautiful. David’s back had been playing up since the day we went to Girona. I think he did a bit too much! After 2 days rest and me stretching his hamstrings he was back to normal.

Zoom in to the left-this pergola we landed up taking down.

A very still hot evening and the sunset was beautiful.

Had a walk around the very small village of Arboleas then walked back to the villa for a swim.

Called into the Bar Trinidad for a beer on the way back- again all English.

Arboleas is in Almeria and is known for making all the spaghetti westerns here.

Les swan for one hour and he’s 80 this year!

Started weeding the front garden.

Les made us the best pancakes ever with fresh lemons off his tree. We had a game of Scrabble but Les and Ali were too good for us!

Yellow Rose House.

Flipping of the pancakes.

Started on the back garden. Lots of rendering for David to be done.

Started painted The Casita (little house) the shed.

It’s a messy job.

Les took us out for a really good Chinese.

Started to take all the pergola down.

Off to the hardware and garden shop.

Found this in the pool!

I made Les his favourite-steak pie 🥧 I must admit it turned out delicious.

Relaxing after a hard days work.

Had a FaceTime chat with Trace then with our Jess.

All the pergola we took down we then spent a good few hours cutting with the chainsaw. Now Les has a good batch for the winter. At one stage the chainsaw stopped and we couldn’t get it going. Les had to drive into Albox and would you believe we had put the brake on that’s why it wasn’t working!!!
Made a banana cake and a sticky date and walnut cake with caramel sauce.

Les and Ali in the background putting up some new wall ornaments on the new area.

Another chat about Brexit! Les and Ali are obsessed.

David made a base for the outdoor shower.

A final swim before heading to Alicante airport. It really does look very nice everywhere and it was a very satisfying job. We got spoilt rotten again and was very well looked after.

It was a bit sad saying goodbye to Les. He loved having us there.

The 2 hour taxi ride to Alicante airport was €100 the flight for all 3 of us was €38!

Easy Jet flight to Luton. So staying with Ali in Whitwell before going back to Harpenden. What a fantastic time we had. Adios Spain until next time.
