Toledo

Wed 26th March 2014
Up at 6.30am and walked to the bus stop for our bus (which was a lovely coach) to Toledo for the day at 8.15am. E12 return for both of us. Sunny but chilly day. Arrived and got on a small bus up into the walled very old city that was the first capital before Madrid. Got in a lift to the 9th floor of the library as it had wonderful views and had a coffee. We then wondered around the old streets which were very interesting. Went across the Puente de San Martin (bridge) and took in the view across the River Tajo which surrounds the walled city. Tasted some local ham and pate at some local shops (marzipan is popular here as there are so many almond trees). Every corner seemed to have a church! And there was also a big Jewish quarter. Was recommended a restaurant to have a typical Spanish lunch menu but it was full! They sent us to another one and it was fantastic - again 3 courses bread and wine E13.50 each. After lunch we went to 2 museums - the first was The Torture museum which was very gruesome cannot believe people could be so cruel to each other! The second was The Knights Templars museum (so David was very happy!!!) unfortunately most of this one was in Spanish!!!! Walked back down into the "new town" to catch the coach back to Aranjuez. I am very disappointed as most of these beautiful places we are seeing are ruined by the litter (no one seems to care about dropping rubbish!) and by the graffiti!! Did some supermarket shopping in town before walking back to the campsite. Another big day.
