Sardines & a BBQ

Sun 2nd March 2014

Just the 3 of us went out this morning to let Jane & Laura catch up with things (can u believe it was Coronation Street episodes they had missed since we had arrived!!!!). We walked along the sea front and headed towards the campsite I worked at 30 years ago. Did not recognise the area as so many new buildings were around it. The campsite looked as it was all those years ago but we could not enter as it is still closed until about Easter time. April/May is the time things start opening here in L’Estartit but really not many tourist until end of July through until end of August. The weather was beautiful- about 17˚ - brilliant sunshine but still very chilly. The beach is so wide and still so lovely and I remember so well spending many hours on it and can also remember being here with all my family. We came to the harbour where it was The Sardine Festival (Les Sardinas) it was the last day of the festival (bury the sardine) Many of the children and adults where dressed up in fancy dress and it was a real gathering of locals and a great atmosphere. We paid 1E each for the sardines and got 3 on a piece of bread and they were gorgeous, it used to be all free but the Moroccans’ used to come in their hundreds and take advantage of it - now there is a charge, none of them come! (I don’t think they like the Moroccans’! (Jess didn’t try them of course and Mum you would have loved them!!!!!!!!!!!) Our fingers smelt for the rest of the day “We’ve been fishing all day-smell our fishy fingers”!!!!! Soaked up the moment and headed back to the apartments and helped Jane & Laura get ready for our BBQ.  The table was carried around the front into the sun outside our apartment the BBQ was lit with the wood from the mountains. We had a great afternoon and evening eating/drinking and reminiscing. Their friends Ansell (Gambian) and Olga (Catalan) joined us for a while. Later we all wrapped ourselves in blankets and sleeping bags because it was so cold and we wanted to stay outside. Another great day.
