Granada for the day- Thurs

Thursday 5th June 2014
Set the alarm for 7.30 (early for us!) to get showered and ready to get the 9.15 bus into Granada. About 6 other couples from the campsite were also on the bus, 1.70 euro one way each for a 30min bus drive. (Hope is only paying 18 euros to get to Madrid from Granada on the bus, 5 hrs, which we thought is good). Had a coffee and a quick stroll around whilst we waited till 12 O’clock to meet Hope in the city square. They do free walking tours of the city as we had done in Madrid, so will come back in and do one of those before we leave. Met up with Hope, it was good to see her again, she looked well and we had lunch at a quaint little bar and caught up with each others news. We had pre booked our tickets for the Alhambra to get in at 2 O’clock, and to get into the Palace at 4 O’clock so had plenty of time to look around, although not the gardens which we will also do another day. The whole place was wonderful dating back to the 13th century when the Moors built it and then the Spanish King and Queens took it over and added to it after the Moors had been conquered. The Palace was amazing, the delicate plasterwork which covered the walls and ceilings of every room must have taken for ever to finish, unfortunately we didn’t have any info or explanation in English so will have to do some more reading up of the history of the place. Must admit though that after seeing a few rooms the symmetrical plasterwork got a bit monotonous (are we allowed to say that!!!). After a good 4hrs taking in the sights and great views, we returned down to the city centre to get something to eat and drink before we had to get the bus back to the campsite at 7.30pm and Hope a bit later. We said our goodbyes and will definitely stay in touch with her, she is a lovely girl and we wish her every happiness in whatever she does, as she deserves it. Granada seems to be a lovely city from what we have seen, very spread out, but I’m afraid has the graffiti that spoils most cities these days. A quarter of its population  are students as there are a few Universities here, and you certainly see some strange sights here, but everyone we have met have been friendly. Both very worn out from a long day but another enjoyable one, we are looking forward to a lay in in the morning. Hard life isn’t it!!!!

Arriving in Granada

2 coffees each to get us going!

Took this for you Rog

So many churches and they all have their doors open - so we have to go in.

It was great to see Hope again

The entrance to The Alhambra - then a very steep walk

This was inside the palace of Charles V

Great views from up here

Had a great meal here (on right) before saying goodbye to Hope and getting on our bus.
