Mousehole to Coverack

Tuesday 4th Aug 2015
Happy Birthday to me!
Set off by 10am for Newlyn Harbour and Penzance. Interesting places with proper working harbours. Stopped for coffee as jo's Achilles' tendon was playing up. Do I leave her here? And if I do should I shoot her to put her out of her misery? Luckily after I had gone into the town to get cash out and a spare gas bottle her heal had come good so she could carry on. Stopped at a Morrisons supermarket for supplies before walking onto Marazion and St Michaels Mount. Impressive but not as good as the French equivalent. Tide was out so we could walk out and look at the island. Both local campsites were full so we walked onto Perranuthnoe. Had a couple of birthday beers at the Victoria Inn. Told the barmaid who was very down about Helpx and Workaway (very Shirley Valentine) made her day! Walked on via Prussia Cove and Betty's Cove named after the famous pirate and his wife. Walked passed some very unusual and isolated houses and headed inland but they wanted £24 for a pitch so we carried on to Praa Sands £12 for the night. It was overcast all day and rain coming in overnight- yuk. Pork pies and sandwiches for my birthday dinner!
Wed
Woke up to light showers but managed to get packed away. Set off for Porthleven. Quite a hard walk, think the very long walk yesterday is catching up with us. Walked by more mines and bleaker in the weather conditions today. Got into Porthleven by midday and had a coffee in the harbour, before finding a close by campsite. Pouring with rain by now. We needed to wash clothes but no machine! And the laundrette in town burnt down 10 days ago! Had a few beers in the campsite bar and Jo feel asleep while waiting for a break in the rain. Managed to have a good Skype with Jess from the heat of Las Vegas! Local bus goes to Penryn, thought about getting on it to get our washing done at uncle Ron's! Got a break in the weather to get the tent up £7 per night. Walked around the town and harbour lovely even in the drizzle and heads huge pub meal.
Thurs
Packed away and at off back to the Harbour to pick up the path and what a spectacle The seas were putting on. As big swells today so mighty crashing waves against the harbour walls and rocks. It sounded like bombs going off and very mesmerising. Bought two huge Cornish pasties for lunch. Ended up walking a very long way today!!- some days feel easier than others! Though by the time we got to Lizard we had had enough! Went via a pub at Gunewalloe and the lovely inlet at Mullion Cove. Knynance Cove was awesome. Arrived late in the town of Lizard and had a couple of beers in the pub. Heard all about the cricket from the locals - Aussies all out for 60! Found Henry's Campsite in town for £21 per night and they had a washing machine! Was dark when we walked in and it looked and felt like something from the 60's era- live music playing with flame torches down the paths.
Fri
Not a bad sleep apart from a family group next to us rowing! What happened to the peace and love! Managed to get all our washing down thankfully and set off back to the path by 1pm. Rain coats in and off today but mainly off. Great scenic walk today and even got invited in, by Bob, to view the NCI National Coastwatch Station that he was manning for 4 hours all voluntary. Walked to the lovely fishing village of Cadgwith before stopping at Kennack Cove for a snack dinner while watching the holiday makers on the black sand with theirs bbqs going while we had our raincoats on!! Walked on and found a lovely field over looking the sea for a wild camp. Cup of tea and sat and watched a beautiful sunset and rainbow.
Sat
Up at 7.30am and hung around till 10.30am enjoying the peace and quiet and trying to get our white bits brown in the glorious sunshine. Walked a hard section that was rocky and steep to Coverack, another lovely fishing village for a great grilled mackerel lunch in The Paris Hotel. Caught up with wifi and the blog. That's the only reason we come into pubs!!! Should be halfway tomorrow!!!
