The gorge and the mountain

We arrived at our accommodation in Scharnitz just over the boarder in Austria. This was the lovely view from our bedroom.

The kitchen and dining room.

Our bedroom. Every queen bed here has two single quilts.

The mirror in our bathroom was actually an infrared radiator!

Popped back into Germany (Mittenwald) to stock up on provisions.

Outside we made the most of the snow. At least the roads are clear to get around.

The following morning we went to Partnach Gorge. A bright clear day and we were blown away with what we saw.

A very narrow path all the way along.
Very cold and we got a bit wet from all the melting ice.

Every now and then there was a tremendous crack followed by a loud splash as icicles broke off-in some parts it was quite dangerous and we had to duck under the overhang.

The noise from the raging gorge was deafening.

We drove past this castle which is privately owned.

We went on a big drive around the area and ended up back in Mittenwald. A lovely picturesque village which is famous for its violin making.

Jo is suffering from a cold so had some schnapps as a pre dinner drink (purely medicinal). At the local brewery that served some delicious food.

The following day we were again blessed with clear skies and drove to the town of Obermoos to go up the cable car to the top of Zugspitze which is the highest mountain in Germany-2962m. You can get a cable car from Germany or Austria and we went up the Austrian side as it was cheaper-€48 each. It was well worth it.

When we got to the top and went outside it was -5°C!

We were looking across at 5 different countries!

This poor guy was hanging off the side of the building working the whole time we were up there! He didn’t sound too happy either!!!

Got chocolates.

We could sit and watch the people skiing ⛷

Unbelievable views.

There was a great museum and old movies of how it was constructed from the 1920’s onwards. A great feat of engineering and some very brave workmen who worked from great heights with no harnesses.

We stayed up the mountain until the sun started going down (4pm) the cable car was very fast steep and a bit scary when it went over the pylons and made it swing and it swung even more on the way up because of the wind!

That’s where we have just been. Drove back to our accommodation for homemade burritos and to pack up again for our next stay in Austria.
