Christmas 🎄 on Loch Ness

We arrived at Edinburgh airport at 6pm and after a good flight we got very frustrated with the lack of signage to the car park shuttle bus! We didn’t drive out of the airport until 8.30pm!! We drove a short distance to the budget Ibis airport hotel which turned out to be wonderful value-£42 for the 3 of us including breakfast and parking. In the morning we stopped at a huge shopping centre across from the hotel to stock up on food and drink for Christmas. We even bought a miniature real Christmas tree. We then drove about 3 hours to our accommodation for 4 nights at Fort Augustus.

St Benedict’s Abbey Fort Augustus. Originally a fort stood here from the 1600’s, some of which still remains, and was given to the monks in the 1800’s who made it into an Abbey. Our apartment is the second window up on the left-can you see us?

We are overlooking Loch Ness.

It was very cold in the corridors-colder than outside. Thank goodness our apartment is well heated.

This is the indoor heated pool and sauna but we didn’t have time to use it!

Our apartment.

A lovely touch they had put a tree up for us.

Jess’s bathroom.

Our bathroom.

Our bedroom.

There was a lovely huge tree in the snooker room.

Next morning we drove along Loch Ness to the impressive Urquhart Castle.

We then drove to see the battlefield of Culloden. David was disappointed that the visitor centre was closed.

We then went to the Cairns of Clava.

Back at our apartment we felt very Christmassy in our Christmas jumpers. What do we look like!!! 😂

Christmas morning and what a view of Loch Ness we have.

FaceTimed family and friends.

Opened our pressies.

A very special one from Phoebe 💕

We couldn’t believe the famous English cook from years ago-Fanny Craddock was on the tv. Jess was fascinated!

Before our Christmas dinner we had a walk up the hill overlooking the abbey.

And around the town.

Picking up the flat stones for skimming.

This tower is a navigation light from the Loch to the canal entrance.

We have been very lucky with the dry and clear weather.

Looking for Nessie.

Preparing the turkey.

It’s nearly ready.

We finished the “I love Christmas “ jigsaw on the 4th night.

Drove up to Ben Nevis and unfortunately the cable car was closed due to high winds.

We drove through the pass at Glencoe. The James Bond movie Skyfall was filmed here.

We stopped off on the way back at Glenfinnan. This bridge is where the famous Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter scene was filmed.

Again Glenfinnan-this is where the Jacobean memorial stands. We got here just in time for the sunset at 3.45pm!!!!!!!

Sadly it’s now time to pack up and move on. We could’ve done with another week here. What a great Christmas. Perfect in every way. Off now on a long drive to The Isle of Skye. Don’t think the weather is going to be as kind to us there.
