Munich and Dachau πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Fri 13th Dec 2019.
After a short flight we arrived at Munich airport and met our Jess at the arrivals gate. We got on the train into the city then a short walk to our accommodation for 3 nights. Very nice and good location.

We rugged up and headed for the Christmas Markets and the GlΓΌwein.

We finally decided to eat big German sausages and sauerkraut.

Can you tell we are freezing πŸ₯Ά

The next day we did a walking tour of the city.

The famous Beer Hall. It is famous for Nazi meetings and even a young Mozart was thrown out twice for drunk and disorderly conduct. It was a bit touristy and very expensive and full of locals and football supporters. Worth the experience we had a great time.

Dodgers alley. To avoid walking past a Nazi guard and having to salute him, people who disagreed with the Nazi views walked down this lane. The Nazis soon caught on and out a guard in this lane and stopped everyone who went through. If their reason wasn’t good enough they could be put in prison or shot on the spot!

Beer and pretzels πŸ₯¨ in the Beer Hall.

We were recommended this restaurant which was in the basement of the town hall - Ratskeller.

Very traditional and yummy.

Around more Christmas markets.

Which fur to keep us warm?

This was at the Medieval markets.

in the morning we went on a days tour to Dachau Concentration Camp (Jess had done this tour on a previous trip). It was very interesting but disturbing. Dachau was the first ever German Concentration Camp.

“Work will set you free”

This strip of grass that was around the whole perimeter was there as a sign of what freedom they were missing out on. If the prisoners stepped on it they would be shot and guards were known to taunt them by throwing their caps onto the grass and then telling them to go and pick it up which was of course was a death sentence.

The original guards tower.

Anti escape tench and posts.

The gas chambers and ovens!

The shower/gas chamber. Only one of these heads are left. The rest have been stolen!

The ovens.

Inside the showers/gas chambers. Dachau gas chambers were a trial experiment which were later used in the extermination camps. Most prisoners in Dachau died from hanging, being shot, tortured to death or disease.

“To honour the dead and warn the living” he has his hands in his pockets as an act of defiance because the Nazis provided pockets on their uniforms but to suppress their freedoms even more did not allow them to put their hands in their pockets!

The original sites of the prisoners huts.

The reconstructed prisoners huts. The 5 hour tour wasn’t really enough to take it all in. Our tour guide was excellent but it was a very somber day but glad we have experienced it.

That evening we met up with Jess and we had to try the famous schnitzels- they were delicious and we are so glad we ordered 2 between 3!

next morning we packed up and headed for the city station to pick up our hire car.

The steering wheel is on the wrong side!

Driving out of Munich.

we stopped off here which was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics.

Josa the eagle!

Where Eddie the Eagle was filmed with Taron Edgerton and Hugh Jackman.

This part of the stadium was built for the 1940 games which of course was cancelled. After lunch here we headed for our next accommodation just over the boarder in Austria πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ή
