Westward Ho! To Clovelly

Tues 7th July 2015

Walked about 2 miles out of Westward Ho! Last night and found a wonderful campsite at Greencliff Farm £14-on our own with great shower & toilet, felt like we had our own ensuite. Helped the farmer & son shift some sheep out of the yards they had just been de-lam bed so a bit of crying by both in the night! Horlicks and biscuits before a good nights sleep. Woke early it had rained on and off all night. Lovely morning overlooking the green fields sea and in the distance the white buildings of Clovelly clinging to the hillside down to the waters edge. Looks a long way - don't know if we will get there today. Great walk but very strenuous. Scenic cliffs then into enchanted woods. No rain but very wet underfoot and at one stage had to hack our way through the undergrowth as the path was overgrown. Stopped at a lovely little hamlet called Bucks Milk - stripped off our boots and socks and dried our feet whilst having a coffee and scotch eggs. Stayed for a while taking in the views and occasional sun. Put on dry socks (but not boots!) before heading on through more wonderful woods and on 3 miles of Hobby Drive (an old carriage wAy built by the men of Clovelly after the Napoleonic Wars). Stopped just above Clovelly to have our Tesco pork pies and salad. Then headed towards the village whilst looking for a spot to wild camp- nothing suitable so ended up tucked away on a grassed area next to the main car park!
Wed
Rain and high winds all night but the tent held up well and we slept. Got smoked out early by someone burning off rubbish nearby - don't know if it was deliberate to get rid of us-but it worked! Walked into Clovelly down the steep cobbled road and stopped at The New Inn for a Full English Breakfast. They were doing B&B for £65 per night so decided to book in. This was at 9am so was absolute heaven. Did all our washing - it was pretty dirty. Then spread it around the room and shared bathroom to dry. Both took long baths and laid out on the bed until lunchtime. Strolled down the street to the harbour for a pint in the sun and a chat to various people. Clovelly is supposed to be one of the prettiest villages in England. It is owned by one family and you now have to pay to come down the street-the monies raised goes towards the upkeep of all the houses that are all rented, they still use sledges to get provisions up and down. It seems a bit antiquated these days. Had a couple of crab sandwiches before sitting in our comfortable old lounge to catch up with the wi-fi. Great to have a day off the walk as some severe days ahead of us. Wonder if we will miss out tent and sleeping bags tonight!!! Night night xxx
