That hill to Monsanto is too steep - or is it?

Mon 18th Aug 2014

Packed up Priscilla and left Tomar after having spent 4 nights. Headed towards Dornes. When we arrived the church in David's book was closed so we walked around the lovely very small village that was on a gorgeous lake. Showed a young girl Priscilla and she said we must go to Porto. Headed off towards Monsanto and the drive was very mountainous windy and picturesque. We are also about the only ones on the road which is great. Stopped in a village to stock up at the supermarket and also got an iron-it's only taken us 8months to realise we do need one (should have taken you up on your offer Sheila!) Went through some small narrow villages before seeing Monsanto in the distance on a big hill. As we got closer we were both thinking "there's no way we can drive up there to that village!" As it was steep and clinging to the side of the hill. We got half way up and stopped for advice and as luck would have it an English guy driving down the hill stopped and told as if we were confident enough we could get further up. So off we went higher and steeper to encounter a hairpin bend which as we went around the fridge door flung open!!! Ended up stopping again and walking up to suss it out. No space but we could just about turn around and park up in a small parking area close to the top. Happy Days!! Had something to eat and a quick walk up into the village as the sun went down and cannot wait to explore tomorrow. Another gem found.
