3 Villages

Wed 19th March 2014 Beceite Valderrobres & Morella
8.30am start this morning and drove to the village of Beceite. It was very quiet like most of the villages we have been to! We are wondering where are all the people? This village was not the best we’ve been to but we still enjoyed looking around the church and the old town. We had a coffee in a local bar and watched as the local old men gathered for what sounded like a good old gossip! 4 men were repointing the stone wall on the bridge and while they had a smoko David jumped in and picked up the trowel and helped out! He said it was easy. We then drove to Valderrobres which had a beautiful medieval castle and church and both were open! We watched a short historical video (in English) and got a leaflet in English! (This has been rare). It was very chilly and a bit overcast but the Castle & church were amazing. We certainly got a feel for the history of the place here. Onwards towards the third village of the day Morella - before this we stopped on the side of the road for some lunch. As we approached Morella we were wowed again! A castle on top of a huge rock soared above the terraced village below which was totally enclosed by the old wall. The rock itself before anything was built here would have been impressive. We parked Priscilla at the Aires with a magnificent view and then set off into the walled village through an impressive gate house. Luckily the tourist information office had just opened so again we got a map and info in English. We spent the next 3 hours taking it all in. We had to climb very high up into the oldest areas of the castle which dates back to the late 900’s when The Moors ruled this area. Lots of additions through the ages and the castle has been through numerous wars. From the very top the views were spectacular and we counted 127 wind turbines in the distance! (Spain certainly shows up Australia for renewable energy. Walked back down through the main, well looked after, streets looking at all the shops displaying their local produce and wares. One bar we walked past was showing a live Bullfight on the TV!!!!!!!!! (Cannot believe people enjoy watching such cruelty). Back to Priscilla for nice showers and evening meal.
