Welsh Coast Path-Pembrokeshire- St Dogmaels to Whitesands

1st Sept 2019

The start of The Pembrokeshire Coast Path just passed Poppit Sands this picture was taken.

A glorious days walk today.

It is unbelievable just how close to the cliff end we walk sometimes! Good job the wind is coming us onshore.

We had a picnic stop here. Ceibwr Bay. Reminded us a bit of Canal Rocks in WA.

This section was absolutely stunning and also the most challenging (according to our book) and it was!!

Didn’t think we were going to find a flat spot but then the perfect area appeared. Good job we didn’t go any further as there would have been nowhere to pitch the tent. Lleine.

After a great nights sleep we carried on our walk towards Newport.

Coming into Newport we googled over a coffee and found accommodation here way too expensive. Wanted a b&b as rain is forecast. So we hopped on a bus to Fishguard. We found a great hotel/hostel called John James Hamilton. Loved it so much we checked in for 2 nights to have a bit of a rest.

Had a few beers in this great little pub and chatted with the locals. That night we had a fabulous meal st The Royal Oak.

Fishguard locals right to left, Wayne (builder) Ian (the landlord) and Andrea (Wayne’s partner). They really made us feel very welcome and we had a great laugh. Maybe we will catch up again.

We went to the Fishguard library and saw the Tapestry which the local women had made to celebrate the last invasion of Britain in 1797 by the French nearby at Carregwastad.

It was so very detailed and very long - amazing.

Glad we had today off as the weather was a bit damp. Walked around the The lower town and Fishguard before ending up in The Fishguard Arms again and later another meal in The Royal Oak.

Steve-The owner of John James Hamilton House. A very interesting guy with some great travel stories and plenty of local knowledge. He made us very welcome.

Steve kindly gave us this guide book that his parents had written and illustrated in the early 70’s.

We set off from Fishguard with a backpack of clean clothes and off we were again.

Walking towards Goodwick we could see the SenaLine Ferry for Ireland that leaves twice a day from here and takes about 4 hours.

Most of today was spent looking down into coves all full of seals and their pups as now is the time of the year for giving birth. Within 16-21 days they are weened and their mothers are normally already pregnant again!

The commemorative rock of the 1797 invasion.

Just when you want a quiet picnic and rest these wild ponies interrupt you!

The Lighthouse at Strumble Head.

We walked on and on and in strong winds but know where we could find to put the tent up.

But what a relief when we walked past this YHA at Pwll Deri. They had room for us and it was only £13 each. It was like a four star view! Had a very welcome hot shower and cooked up our noddles.

I was in a dormitory with 7 other women-I think I kept them awake with my snoring 😴 David on the other hand only had one other male in his dormitory.

The view from the breakfast room!

This was our first experience of a YHA and we were very impressed. You can see it here in this picture-what a spot.

Off again now towards Abercastle.

Again watching the seals and their pups.

Abercastle.

Can you spot David on the path?

Watching the seals.

The path ahead towards Porthgain where we hope to get a meal and pitch our tent.

Arrived in Porthgain to find the fantastic pub The Sloop Inn. Had a great meal and some beers. We asked the guy behind the bar where we could pitch the tent and he showed us a spot on the village green once it was dark!! Happy Days.

The old slate and brickworks of Porthgain. Right on the harbour.

Morning in Porthgain. You can see our tent on the right-a bit cheeky eh! Waited for The Sloop to open at 9.30am for coffee and breakfast.

Up and out of Porthgain and hope to get to Whitesands beach 10 miles away.

Wonderful scenery and weather again-how lucky are we 😁

Nearly there and this is Ramsey Island.

Whitesands Beach above my head.

It’s looking promising.

Set the tent up on a very basic campsite but right on the beach. Can you believe this is Wales! In September! And David is going in the ocean.

Invigorating but David still can’t find his penis!

There was a cafe right next door for a meal and a few beers. We ended up staying here 3 nights.

Next morning we watched The National British Surf Life Saving Competition.

This was great gun to watch.

We then got the local coastal bus into St David’s. This is a city and has the smallest cathedral.

The Bishops Palace.

We watched a whole wedding. The hats!!!!!!!

The happy couple drove off in their Porsche.

Back at Whitesands we walked along the beach and had another meal in the cafe while watching the sunset.

The owners son Jake. After a long chat it turns out the owner is the godfather of John Phillips from Century 21 real estate in Mandurah (where we live) he sold us our apartment! What a small world it certainly is.

Nice view of the sunset from our tent.

Watched more competitions this morning and spent the rest of the day on the beach reading our books and later in the cafe catching op on this blog. The weather isn’t looking great for tomorrow so we may get some buses back to the car at New Quay to move it along the path.
