Faro on the train - Thurs

Thurs 17th July 2014

Another very hot day. Walked to the train station and took the train to Faro for 2.80 euro each return. The trip only took 12 mins. The train was very "rustic". Arrived in Faro and walked into the old city. In the Cathedral there was a museum and at the top of the tower we could see that the whole of this area is national park Ria Formosa - all waterways in the sea going out and joining lots of Islands- so no beaches along this park of the coast. In the Municipal Museum we listened to a recital of Portuguese Guitar in a very old monastery. He played in the style called Fado which means destiny. In 1755 an earthquake and tsunami destroyed most of the buildings along this coast and went 4 miles inland too. Many Roman ruins have been discovered here too. Still cannot make ours minds up about Portugal yet - as we walk around it seems more in crisis than Spain was. Even in this main city if Faro there is so much graffiti and buildings that are neglected. Will be interesting to see what the rest is like as we have heard only good reports from other motor homers. Had a meal and heard on the news of a Malaysian Airline being shot down!! We had omelet and salad and 2 huge beers each followed by the typical Portuguesse pastries and coffees all for 30 euro. Off we then went to The Chapel of Bones!!!!! Inside a church was the chapel and OMG! See the photos - it was horrible! Don't know who they were!!!! We will have to google to find out more! Walked back to the train station for our trip back to Olhao. Honestly some of the area are like a war zone!!! Back to Priscilla by 8pm worn out again!!
