Wednesday
Late start today and went
to St Albans again to see The Roman Verulamium town http://www.stalbansmuseums.org.uk/Your-Visit/Roman-Town/The-Roman-Theatre-of-Verulamium.
It was the biggest Roman settlement in England. We don’t know what it is about
St Albans but we can hear Julius Caesar saying “Friends Romans Countrymen lend
us your woolly hats gloves and thermal underwear”! As it was so cold here again
and foggy this time! Spent a long time in the Museum (Trace would have loved
this) it was very interesting but David got told off for standing on the
mosaics! We attempted to walk around the site to find places of interest but
struggled to find them in the fog! A real Pea Souper! Couldn’t believe there
were school children there in shorts & short sleeve shirts - David wanted
to slap them and tell them to “put some bloody clothes on”! Walked into town to
again try to sort out phones etc. Went in Marks & Spencer and was amazing
by their food section .There was a market on and everywhere was lit up with Christmas
lights so looked gorgeous. We then headed back down past The Abbey to Ye Olde
Fighting Cocks Pub http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Olde_Fighting_Cocks which according to the Guinness book
of records is the oldest pub in England 793AD. Had a lovely pub meal then
walked back to the car to find it covered in ice! Had to scrape the windscreen!
On our way back to Harpenden
we called into The Harvester in Flamstead to meet up with Nick and his new
girlfriend Susie. She was very nice and lives on a barge that we hope to see at
a later date.
