Bude to Boscastle

Sun 12th July 2015
Rained all night and we had to wait until 9am to get the tent down. Bumped into Stuart and Rach as we were leaving the campsite. Wet weather gear on and it stayed on all day! Met David and Jill in the cafe at Widemouth Bay and also Rebecca who had walked the Hartland Quay to Bude section in one day!!! Hats off to her-please note S&R she didn't go home cause it was raining! Very hard walk again today especially the last couple of miles into Crackington Haven. Even though wet we enjoyed the dramatic coastline and isolation. Carpets of heather are appearing on the hills now. The steepest ascents and descents we have had so far. Hate to think what would happen if we tripped or lost our balance. Glad to finally walk into Crackington Haven and at £60 for the night in a room at the Coombe Barton Inn inc breakfast seemed a no brainer. Both had a lovely hot bath before a good roast/beers and chats with the locals. Overall a great day.
Mon
Still very overcast and very windy. Didn't set off until 10.30am as wanted to enjoy the room for as long as poss. Climbed the first exposed hill, Cambeak, and OMG! The wind was unbelievable-at one stage we had to sit down to stop ourselves being blown over!-scary (worse than Mt Wellington in Hobart Jess!)
A lot of the walk today was very close to the cliff edge in high winds and even though no actual rain low cloud made most of the walk invisible. So we really didn't enjoy today's walk. We were glad to get to Boscastle (a lovely seaside village that had a huge flood in 2004 with a lot of damage. Booked into The Bridge House B&B £75 for another night of comfort. Too went and windy for the tent. A couple of beers in The Cobweb Inn then showers and Cornish Pasties in our room.

Rebecca? Had walked Hartland Quay to Bude! In one go! What a star.

Wet but spectacular.
Trying to get a shot of the steepness!
Careful not to slip! Long way to the bottom!
A welcome view - finally at Crackington Haven.

Heading into Widmouth Cove
David & Jill-Maths teachers from the Isle of Wight. On a walking holiday from Westward Ho! To St Ives-we are always bumping into them.

A tough day so checked into The Coombe Barton Inn for the night and had the best bath ever.
Catching up with the locals over a few pints and a roast dinner.
Just checked out of the Inn after another full English breakfast and heading for Boscastle.
Just after leaving Crackington Haven-will never forget that hill!
Last valley before Boscastle and weather finally clearing.
View from our B&B for the night - Bridge House in Boscastle. Could not face the tent tonight!

  1. Hi J & D, hats off to you guys for taking on the whole walk in a oner. Guessing that you may be enjoying a few days in Padstow at the mo.
We couldn't have possibly carried on as we hadn't pre-booked our luggage transfer plus our pole snapped and ripped through the tent in the extreme conditions at the Bude 4* campsite.
Missing having the sea to our right, but we did go for a walk at home on our anniversary which took us under a bypass road (A303) and round a pungent sewage works - not quite the same feel/smell, but we did manage to stop at a number of nice pubs along the way.
You have inspired us to rethink how we take on the next stage of the coast path - all the best to you, and we look forward to following the rest of your blog. Love Rach & Stew xx
